When you return a wig, it can feel like a simple transaction — send it back, get your money back, done. But there is a real story behind every return that most customers never see, and we think it is worth telling honestly. A returned wig almost never goes back on the shelf as a brand-new item. More often, it becomes something we have to sell at a loss just to recover part of what we originally paid for it.

What Actually Happens When a Wig Comes Back to Us

When a wig ships out to you, it arrives in pristine, factory-fresh condition — sealed, protected, and exactly as the manufacturer intended. The moment that box is opened, that specific level of "brand new" is genuinely difficult to fully restore, even when a customer follows every care instruction perfectly and returns the wig in beautiful condition.

Once a return arrives back at our warehouse, it does not simply get relisted at full price. Every returned wig has to be carefully inspected, and depending on its condition, it typically goes through some combination of the following:

Inspection. Someone on our team examines the wig closely — checking the part, the cap, the fiber, and the overall condition against our return policy standards.

Repackaging. Even a wig that comes back in excellent shape needs to be carefully repositioned, protected, and repackaged by hand — a process that takes real time and materials, every single time.

Reclassification. A wig that has been out of its factory-sealed packaging, even briefly, generally can no longer be sold as a true "new, unopened" item. In many cases, it has to be relisted as open-box, clearance, or outlet stock instead.

Markdown. This is the part that costs us the most. A wig that has to be reclassified is typically sold at a meaningfully reduced price to reflect its new status — often 30 to 50% below its original retail price, depending on the style and condition. That markdown comes directly out of our margin on that piece.

Why We Cannot Simply Resell Every Return at Full Price

We wish we could tell you that every returned wig goes right back into inventory and gets sold to the next customer at the same price you paid. The honest answer is that we cannot, and here is why.

Wigs are a personal, close-contact product. Once a wig has been out of its sealed packaging — even for a few minutes, even if it was never actually worn — most customers understandably expect to know that when they are purchasing something described as brand new. That expectation is completely fair, and it is one we fully support. It means that a returned wig, however carefully it was handled, typically needs to be sold with a clear open-box or clearance designation, at a lower price, to the next customer who buys it.

That price difference is not something we pass on to you as a fee at the time of return. It is simply the real cost our business absorbs every time a wig comes back — the gap between what we originally sold it for and what we can now sell it for as a reclassified item.

Why We Still Offer a Generous Return Policy Anyway

Given everything above, you might wonder why we offer returns at all. The answer is simple: we believe you deserve the chance to find the right wig, even if that means the first one you try is not it. Buying a wig sight unseen, without being able to try it on in a store, comes with real uncertainty — and we think it would be unfair to ask you to carry all of that risk alone.

That is why our standard return policy has no restocking fees, and why we built tools like our Wig Size Charts by Brand, our head measuring guide, and our MyHairMagic virtual try-on tool — to help you get it right the first time, before you even place your order. Every one of these tools exists because we would genuinely rather help you avoid a return altogether than process one after the fact.

At the same time, the real cost of returns is exactly why we have a few specific policies in place — like a maximum of 2 returns per 120-day period, and a requirement that all returns go through our official Return System. These are not arbitrary rules. They exist because absorbing unlimited markdown losses on unlimited returns is not something any retailer can sustain indefinitely — and if we could not sustain it, we would not be able to keep offering a return policy this generous to everyone at all.

Why This Matters for Your Prices, Too

Here is the part of this story that connects directly back to you: the losses we absorb on returns do not just disappear. In the long run, every business has to account for that cost somewhere — and the honest truth is that a retailer facing a high volume of returns has two choices. Either raise prices across the board to cover the losses, or pull back on the discounts, promotions, and programs that make great hair more affordable in the first place.

We would much rather do neither. That is exactly why we have built programs like our Belle Tress Buyers Club, our seasonal promotions, and our everyday discounted pricing — because a healthy, sustainable return rate is what allows us to keep offering those savings in the first place. Every time a wig is returned, repackaged, reclassified, and sold at a loss, that is margin we can no longer put toward the next promotion, the next markdown, or the next great deal we would otherwise be able to pass along to you.

In other words, keeping returns to a reasonable, healthy level is not just good for us — it is genuinely good for you, too. It is one of the reasons we can keep our prices as competitive as they are, and it is a big part of why we invest so heavily in tools that help you get the right wig, the right size, and the right color the first time. Fewer unnecessary returns means we can keep passing more savings on to our entire community, rather than building those losses into everyone's prices.

How You Can Help — And Help Yourself

The single best way to avoid the disappointment of a return, and to help us keep offering a policy this fair to every customer, is to use the tools we have built before you order:

📏 Check your cap size using our Wig Size Charts by Brand — sizing varies meaningfully from one manufacturer to the next.

📐 Measure your head correctly using our step-by-step measuring guide before you choose a size.

Try before you buy with MyHairMagic, our virtual try-on tool that lets you see a style and color on your own photo.

💬 Ask Angela℠ for personalized guidance on style, color, and fit — a quick conversation before you order is often all it takes to land on the right choice the first time.

And if you do decide to return something, following our care guidelines for returns — keeping the zig-zag part intact, not brushing or styling the hair, and repackaging it carefully — genuinely helps reduce the loss on that piece, which helps us keep the policy generous for everyone.

The Bottom Line

We are not sharing this to discourage you from ever returning a wig — returns are a normal, necessary part of shopping for something this personal, and we will always be here to help when a style simply is not the right match. We are sharing it because we think you deserve to understand the real reasoning behind our policies, rather than just being told the rules. When you understand why something costs what it costs, the whole relationship feels more honest — and that is exactly the kind of relationship we want to have with you.
